A free meta description generator that writes for clicks

Your meta description is the short paragraph under your page title in Google. It's often the only thing that convinces someone to click your result instead of the one above or below it. The BlogDada meta description generator helps you write that paragraph quickly and well.

Enter your focus keyword and one sentence about what the page offers. Choose the type of page and the tone you want. In a second you get five different meta descriptions built from proven copywriting patterns, each checked for length and keyword use. Pick your favourite, fine-tune it in the editor, and watch a live Google preview on desktop and mobile. When it looks right, copy the text or the complete HTML tag.

The tool is free, needs no account, and runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server. It works for blog posts, product pages, service pages, tools, homepages and local businesses.

    What is a meta description?

A meta description is an HTML tag that summarises a web page. It lives in the page's <head> section and looks like this:

    <meta name="description" content="Your summary of the page goes here.">

Visitors never see it on the page itself. Search engines such as Google and Bing use it as a suggestion for the snippet they show in search results, and social networks and messaging apps sometimes use it when a link is shared. It's your one chance to describe the page in your own words to people who are deciding where to click.

Why meta descriptions matter for SEO

Google has said that meta descriptions are not a direct ranking factor. So why do SEO professionals care about them? Because rankings are only half the story. A page in position three that gets more clicks than position two receives more traffic, and a clear, relevant description is one of the few things you control that directly affects that click-through rate.

    • Higher click-through rate: a description that answers the searcher's question and promises a clear benefit earns more clicks from the same ranking.
    • Bolded keywords: Google often highlights words in the snippet that match the search, which makes your result stand out visually.
    • Better-qualified visitors: when the description sets accurate expectations, people who click are more likely to stay, read and convert.
    • Brand consistency: a well-written snippet presents your brand the way you want instead of a random sentence pulled from the page.

Google doesn't always use the description you write. Several industry studies have found it rewrites snippets for more than half of searches, usually when a different part of the page matches the query better. A description that accurately reflects the page and includes the main keyword is much more likely to be shown as written.

How to use the meta description generator

    1. Enter your focus keywordThis is the main phrase people type into Google to find the page, such as "vegan protein powder" or "WordPress speed optimization".
    2. Describe what the page offersWrite one short, specific sentence. Mention the outcome, not just the topic: "Compare 10 tested brands by taste, price and ingredients" is far better than "information about protein powder".
    3. Choose the page type and toneThe page type decides the call to action, such as "Read the guide", "Shop now" or "Get a free quote". The tone changes the style of the opening and closing.
    4. Add highlights (optional)Tap selling points such as free shipping, no sign-up or updated for this year. The generator fits them in where there's room.
    5. Pick, preview and copyClick Preview and edit on any variation. Adjust the wording, check the length bar and the Google preview, then copy the text or the HTML tag.

What is the ideal meta description length?

Google doesn't truncate snippets at a fixed number of characters. It cuts them by pixel width, because a line of wide letters such as "W" and "M" takes more space than a line of narrow ones such as "i" and "l". On desktop, snippets are usually shown up to about 920 pixels, which is roughly 150 to 160 characters. On mobile the limit is similar in characters but spread over more lines.

    LengthWhat happensRecommendation
Under 70 charactersToo short to explain the page. Google may replace it with page text.Add the benefit and a call to action.
70–119 charactersShown in full but leaves space unused.Acceptable; add one more detail if you can.
120–155 charactersShown in full on desktop and mobile in most cases. The sweet spot. Aim here.
Over 160 characters or 920 pxCut off with an ellipsis (…).Shorten it and keep key words at the start.

The generator and editor check both. The coloured bar measures estimated pixel width, and the counter shows characters, so you can see at a glance whether your description will be cut off.

How to write a great meta description

Lead with the keyword and the benefit

People scan search results quickly. Put the keyword and the main benefit in the first half of the description so they're visible even if the end is cut off.

    Match search intent

Someone searching "how to" wants steps. Someone searching "best" wants a comparison. Someone searching a product name wants price and availability. Tell them the page has what they came for.

    Be specific

Numbers, names and concrete details build trust: "12 tested tools", "ships in 24 hours", "updated for 2026", "no sign-up required". Vague phrases like "great information" give people no reason to choose you.

Use active voice and a clear call to action

Start sentences with verbs where you can: learn, compare, get, discover, shop, book. End with a next step that fits the page, such as "Read the full guide" or "Get your free quote today".

Write a unique description for every page

Duplicate descriptions make different pages look identical in search results and waste your chance to stand out. Prioritise your most important pages first: the homepage, top categories, best-selling products and highest-traffic posts.

    Keep it honest

Don't promise something the page doesn't deliver. Clickbait may win a click, but visitors who bounce straight back to Google don't help your business.

The last example has no keyword, no specific benefit and no reason to click. It's the kind of description Google is most likely to ignore.

    Common meta description mistakes

    • Leaving it empty. Google will pick text from the page, which may be a cookie notice or navigation menu.
    • Keyword stuffing. Repeating the keyword three times reads as spam. Use it once, naturally.
    • Using double quotes. Quotation marks can break the HTML attribute. The tool converts them to safe characters in the copied tag.
    • Copying the first paragraph. Your intro is written for readers who have already arrived. The description is written for people who haven't.
    • Ignoring mobile. Most searches happen on phones. Check the mobile preview before you publish.

How to add a meta description to your site

WordPress with Yoast SEO or Rank Math

Open the post or page, scroll to the Yoast or Rank Math box, and paste your text into the Meta description field. Update the post and you're done.

    Blogger

First enable search descriptions under Settings, Meta tags. Then open a post, find Search description in the post settings panel, and paste the text.

    Shopify, Wix and other builders

Look for a section called SEO, Search engine listing or SEO basics in the page or product settings. Paste the text into the description field.

    Plain HTML

Click Copy HTML tag and paste the result inside the <head> section of your page, ideally right after the <title> tag.

    Meta description vs. title tag

The title tag is the blue clickable headline in search results, and unlike the meta description, it is a ranking signal. Keep titles around 50 to 60 characters with the keyword near the start. The meta description supports the title: it expands on the promise, adds detail and ends with a reason to click. Write them together so they don't repeat each other word for word.

Tip: After publishing, check the page with our website crawler checker to confirm search engines can see your new title and meta description.

Meta description checklist before you publish

Run through these quick checks every time you write a new description. The generator and editor handle most of them for you, but a final human read is always worth it.

    • Length: between 120 and 155 characters, and inside the 920-pixel limit shown on the length bar.
    • Keyword: the focus keyword appears once, ideally in the first half, and reads naturally.
    • Benefit: the searcher can tell in one glance what they'll get from the page.
    • Proof: there's at least one specific detail, such as a number, a feature or a guarantee.
    • Action: the description ends with a clear next step that fits the page type.
    • Accuracy: everything it promises is actually on the page.
    • Uniqueness: no other page on your site uses the same description.
    • Preview: it looks good in both the desktop and mobile preview, with nothing important cut off.

If a page ticks every box, you've given it the best possible chance of earning the click, whatever position it ranks in.

    Frequently asked questions

Is this meta description generator free?

Yes. The BlogDada meta description generator is free, needs no sign-up, and has no daily limit.

How long should a meta description be?

Aim for about 120 to 155 characters. Google cuts snippets by pixel width, roughly 920 pixels on desktop, so the tool checks both characters and estimated pixels.

    Do meta descriptions affect rankings?

Google has said meta descriptions are not a direct ranking factor. They matter because a clear, relevant description can increase the number of people who click your result.

Why does Google show a different description?

Google may rewrite the snippet using text from your page when it thinks that text better matches the search. A description that closely matches the page content and main keyword is more likely to be used.

Should every page have a unique meta description?

Yes. Duplicate descriptions make pages look the same in search results. Write a unique one for each important page.

Where do I add the meta description in WordPress?

With Yoast SEO or Rank Math, open the post editor, find the SEO box and paste it into the Meta description field. Without a plugin, add the meta tag to the head section of your theme.

Does the tool use AI or send my text anywhere?

The descriptions are built in your browser from proven copywriting patterns, so your text is not sent to any server and results appear instantly.

Should I include my keyword in the meta description?

Yes. Google often bolds words that match the search, which makes your result stand out. Use the keyword once, naturally, near the beginning.

Write your next meta description now

A few extra seconds on your meta description can turn an ignored search result into a steady stream of clicks. Go back to the meta description generator, enter your keyword, and pick the version that makes your page impossible to skip.
